Description

An Dúlamán Irish Maritime Gin

Located in the far north west of Ireland, on the rugged atlantic coast, An Dúlamán gin is made in the shadow of Sliabh Liag (a mountain in County Donegal).

In creating the gin, eleven different botanicals have been carefully selected. Six of these are the 'conventional' gin botanicals, including juniper berries. However it is the other five, which give this gin its sense of place (and helps with the name). Five different varieties of locally harvested seaweed capture the “Draíocht na Farraige” or 'magic of the sea'. These five seaweeds are: Carrageen Moss, Dulse, Sugar Kelp, Channel Wrack and Pepper Dulse.

They create their gin in small batches, and each bottle has the batch and bottle number handwritten on the neck label. The bottle itself is eye-catching, and made of dark glass/ It's reminiscent of the bottles which washed up on the Donegal shorline during the wrecking of the Spanish Armada.

The gin itself is crystal clear, but on occasion, when ice is added, takes on a light blue grey mist like quality - which reminds of the maritime environment the gin comes from again. The nose also brings hints of the sea breeze, with a little juniper and a hint of cassia spiciness.

The palate itself is incredibly bright, with the juniper coming quickly to the fore, but with a delicate edge to it. This is definitely a complex gin though, with an umami richness (savoriness), brisk saltiness, zest and a buttery smoothness. Hints of chestnut earthiness and defined tannin notes are found too.

It finishes with the rich umami flavours lingering, but joined by a peach like sweetness as the finish melts into a comforting warmth in the mouth.

Perfect Serve

This is delicious in a gin & tonic, and takes a lemon garnish really well (bringing out the flavours). It works best (in our opinion) with a neutral tonic - and we liked Three Cents Tonic Water. However, if you would like to add an edge of sweetness, try their Aegean Tonic.

Take a large glass and fill with ice. Pour in 50ml of the gin, and then gently pour over 200ml of your chosen tonic. Stir gently and garnish with a slice or two of fresh lemon.
