Glendalough Single Cask Irish Whiskey - Madeira Cask Finish
Created by a group of friends who came from County Wicklow and Dublin, The Glendalough Distilley was born of a passion to revive the heritage of craft distilling in Ireland.
Glendalough itself is one of the most picturesque and visited valleys in Ireland. It is situated in County Wicklow, just south of Dublin within the Wicklow mountains.
Created as part of their Single Cask series, this is a whiskey which has been matured in three different barrels - each of which adds a particular character to the whiskey. Initially it is matured for 3 years in first-fill American Oak Bourbon Barrels. These bring notes of vanilla, and sweet honey.
The second barrels are Spanish Oak Oloroso barrels, which come from the small Andalisian town of Montilla (which is famous for the PX grape). This spanish oak adds layers of nuttiness, and dried fruits.
The final barrel, as the name would suggest, is a Canteiro-aged Madeira wine cask.
On the nose there are notes of dried, rich sultanas and exotic mango and pineapple. These are joined by a marmalade like orange zest.
On the palate it has a complex flavour, but remains light and inviting. Rich fruit flavours or raisins, cherry and plum come through which are joined by vanilla and sweet grain flavours. A touch of peppercorn balances the flavours in the mouth. The finish is clean, with a touch of earthiness joining the rich fruit and spice.
Fun Fact: The monk with his arms raised, seen on all Glendalough's bottles, is St. Kevin of Glendalough. An Irish legend, originally born of Irish Royalty who was said to have lived over 1400 years ago.
